The UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education honours outstanding and innovative contributions made by individuals, institutions and organizations to advance girls’ and women’s education. The Laureates for 2020 are: the Shilpa Sayura Foundation (Sri Lanka) and the Girl Child Network (Kenya).
The Shilpa Sayura Foundation, was rewarded for its project, NextGen Girls in Technology, which helps increase girls’ and women’s participation in the emerging technology sector in Sri Lanka by training thousands of girls and teachers on in-demand industry skills.
The Girl Child Network, was recognized for its project, Our Right to Learn – Reaching the Unreached, which increases access to quality primary school education for vulnerable children, including girls, in Kenya’s hardest-to-reach areas while empowering them to raise their voices in and out of school.
Established in 2015 with generous funding from the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Prize is annually granted to two laureates and consists of an award of US$50,000 to each laureate to help further their work in the area of girls’ and women’s education. The Prize contributes directly to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and, in particular, Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education and Goal 5 on gender equality.
