Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a non-invasive and precise technique that uses gamma radiation to treat brain tumors or other abnormalities. In this video, you will learn how Elekta Esprit*, a Leksell Gamma Knife, works and how it is used for stereotactic radiosurgery in the brain.
The video will show you how the gamma knife procedure works, from the generation of the gamma radiation beams from a radioactive isotope of cobalt called Cobalt-60, to the shaping and focusing of the beams by a sophisticated collimator system to match the size and shape of the target. You will also see how the patient’s head is immobilized by a frame or a mask system, and how the patient’s position and the treatment plan are verified and adapted by an integrated cone beam CT imaging system. Finally, you will witness how the treatment is delivered to the patient, and how the motion management system monitors the patient’s breathing and head movement to ensure safety and quality of the treatment.
