The Pace Report: "The Pathway To Reopening" The Spike Wilner Interview
Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring pianist and owner of Smalls Jazz Club, Spike Wilner.
As New York City has been steadily been reopening its restaurants and bars, the music venues have been given the green light from the state and city as to how they are to operate moving forward. In addition to the outdoor seating procedures the city is allowing bar owners and restauranteurs to allow inside seating up to 25 percent.
Spike Wilner, owner of both Smalls Jazz Club and Mezzrow, recently reopened its doors to the public and is encouraging music fans from all over the world to come back to this historic venue. In addition to the grand reopening during the last six months both clubs have been closed, Spike started the not for profit SmallsLive Foundation For Jazz Art and Education. This has allowed for him to stream daily live concerts from Smalls during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as raise money to keep both venues open during this critical time. Mezzrow will open later as the city and state loosens its restrictions as winter approaches.
I sat down with Spike briefly to talk about how he's made the reopening of Smalls cost effective and safe for patrons of live music amid the COVID pandemic, details on the mission of SmallsLive Foundation, and reflect on his piano hero, Tommy Flanagan.
Smalls is now open daily with their shows starting promptly at 5:00pm. Streaming of the shows begin at 4:45pm and you can make contributions and view the performances on their website at www.SmallsLive.com. You can follow Spike online on Facebook at Facebook.com/SpikeWilner or Instagram at Instagram.com/SpikeWilner.
