The Southwest Region has purchased seven hitch-mount message signs through the Highway Safety Improvement Program funds. The Instalert 24 signs are made by All Traffic Solutions and are being used by the maintenance garages. The signs increase driver awareness during maintenance operations and promote safety. Mounted to the hitch of the maintenance truck, signs can be removed and stored in the truck when not in use. They meet MMUTCD standards, with a 10-inch text height and 5-foot bottom sign height. Maintenance crews already have been using these signs during pothole patching and have observed more vehicles moving over.
