Here are a few tips to help you know how well your child is performing relative to their peers.
Step 1: Ask your child's teacher
Ask your child's teacher whether the student is learning math at grade level, and how that evaluation is made.
Tip
The test used to evaluate a student's ability in math may be determined by the school, school district, or state. There are no national standards.
Step 2: Contact state board of education
Contact your state board of education to find out how grade-level expectations in mathematics are set in the state. Compare your child's abilities in math with the state's grade-level expectations.
Tip
The national, non-profit Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) provides links to many on-line states' standards at its website.
Step 3: Evaluate your child's math abilities on a national scale
Get a rough measure of your child's math abilities on a national scale by comparing your state's ranking at the National Assessment of Education Progress website, nces.ed.gov.
