One of America's most provocative public intellectuals, Dr. Cornel West has maintained a passion for communication to a vast variety of publics in order to keep alive the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - a legacy of telling the truth and bearing witness to love and justice.
Dr. West shares his passion, wisdom, and experience on Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. in Weill Hall at the Green Music Center as part of the H. Andréa Neves and Barton Evans Social Justice Lecture Series.
His writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the traditions of the Black Baptist Church, progressive politics, and jazz. The New York Times has praised his "ferocious moral vision." Graduating magna cum laude from Harvard in just three years, Dr. West continued his education at Princeton where he obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy. Currently, he is Professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice at Union Theological Seminary and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University.
He is an active author and editor of many contemporary classics: Race Matters, Democracy Matters, and more. He also appears in many documentaries, films, and has produced spoken-word albums. With these he has won the Grand Prix in France for the best Jazz Album of the Year for 2009; The Cornel West Theory's Second Rome; and the Raheem DeVaughn's Love & War: Master Peace.
Founded in 2005 with a generous endowment from H. Andréa Neves and Barton Evans, this lecture series seeks to bring to Sonoma State University well known lecturers in the fields of social science, humanities, and education to speak on issues of social justice.
The founders, as well as an increasing number of private donors, are committed to providing SSU students and members of the local community opportunities to hear and engage with noted authors, educators, public servants, and activists on topics of social equity.
