On 18 April 2023, over 170 international experts gathered for a SUERF BAFFi Bocconi webinar on “Completing a Genuine Economic and Monetary Union”.
In his book “Completing a Genuine Economic and Monetary Union”, published by Cambridge University Press in January 2023, Professor Iain Begg from the London School of Economics examines efforts to strengthen Economic and Monetary Union in the European Union, especially over the last decade. Prof Begg asks whether enough has been done to render EMU more sustainable and resilient. Drawing on a survey of 111 leading experts on the economics and politics of EMU, the book reviews the wide-ranging reforms undertaken since the crises of the early 2010s and assesses whether they go far enough. Although Prof. Begg concludes that much has been done to push the euro towards being a more complete currency, he identifies remaining flaws and challenges which EU leaders need to resolve.
