"Chief Blair Praises Ethnic Press"

"You are important to my business, which is public service."

That was the clear message that Toronto Police Service (TPS) Chief William Blair delivered to various ethnic media outlets during a recent reception in the Senior Officers lounge at police headquarters.

I value the role of the ethnic press in Toronto because you are the medium by which there is dialogue between ourselves and the different communities you represent, Blair added.

It doesnt take place on the six o clock news or through the Toronto Sun or the Globe & Mail. It takes place through your publications and radio and TV stations.

Chief Blair proudly spoke of the emphasis the Service has placed in increasing the visible minority presence among the ranks.

More than 50% of police graduates in the last few years speak a language other than English in Canadas largest municipal police service, which was also named one of Canadas 45 Best Diversity Employers for the third straight year.

I want people who are familiar with the cultures of our communities, those who are known and trusted in those communities, so that we can be known and trusted there too, he said.

There are nearly 85 languages spoken in this organization and its my intent that we will get smarter by bringing these people into the organization.

The Chief also said the organization is committed to enhancing relations between the organization and the communities it serves.

I feel we are making good progress in neighbourhoods, especially with young people, he said.

We have police officers in the communities and we are intent on building strong relationships. We are making progress.

TPS Public Information Director Mark Pugash, Inspector Anil Anand, section head George Christopoulos and media relations officers Consts. Wendy Drummond, Isabelle Cotton and Tony Vella attended the event.

Const. Scott Mills, the TPS social media officer, encouraged those seeking timely information, relevant to their communities, to follow the Service on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Thomas Saras, the president and chief executive officer of the National Ethnic Press & Media Council of Canada, thanked the Chief for meeting with members of his organization and other ethnic media partners.
