A wired cycle odometer can measure distance and speed for relatively low cost. Here's how to install one.

These computers work by using a magnet, attached to the spokes, which passes a sensor, usually attached to the front fork leg. Usually the most tricky part is getting the two components close enough together to register a speed on the head unit. Dan's got some handy tips on where to place your sensor and magnet for optimum accuracy, as well as a neat way of routing the cable up towards the bars.
