📊 Some sad statistics - Globally, most waste is currently dumped or disposed of in some form of a landfill. This is according to The World Bank.
👎 Some 37% of global waste is disposed of in some form of a landfill, 8% of which is disposed of in sanitary landfills with landfill gas collection systems and 3.7% from controlled landfills. However, unspecified landfill make up the bulk majority.
👎 Open dumping accounts for about 31% of waste, 19% is recovered through recycling and composting, and 11% is incinerated for final disposal.
Unfortunately, adequate waste disposal or treatment, such as controlled landfills or more stringently operated facilities, is almost exclusively the domain of high- and upper-middle-income countries. Lower-income countries generally rely on open dumping; 93% of waste is dumped in low-income countries and only 2% in high-income countries.
Incineration is also used primarily in high-capacity, high-income, and land-constrained countries.
♻️ We believe a circular economy is the most sustainable way to save our planet, but we can't get there unless we take all socio-economic features into account, by putting a stronger focus towards uplifting lower-income countries through clear guides and strategies, implementing current technologies and taking responsibility.
🌏 A circular future is for all.
