Thrush Holmes’ first solo exhibition with Unit London, What’s it all for?, presents the artist’s continuing drive to push the limits of a familiar yet specific motif. Engaging with the art historical legacy of still life, Holmes’ works explore the many permutations that can be found within a single subject. The exhibition unfolds as the latest chapter of the artist’s oeuvre, unveiling the next step in the longer story of a wider process.
Thrush Holmes (b.1979) is a self-taught, Toronto-based artist whose work is characterised by gestural brushwork and distilled forms that are contrasted by vibrant neon lights. He creates diverse compositions, both intimate and tremendous in scale. The scope of his current work is wide, tackling notions of art, myth, introspection, and biography, while manoeuvring a wide range of iconography, visual vocabulary, and mediums. He has exhibited widely throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Holmes’ work can be found in multiple important collections such as the Elton John Aids Foundation, the Collection of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Collection of Grant Gilbert, United Talent Agency, Government of Ontario Art Collection, Department of Foreign Affairs Canada, the Collection of Yusaku Maezawa, Sony, Dreamworks and Defjam Records.
