Day 121
@paralympics and @specialolympics are two different organizations. I’ve seen people use them interchangeably, please don’t!
Video description/transcript: Tiffany is a Taiwanese American woman speaking to the screen. “Do you want to be a better ally to disabled people? The Paralympics and Special Olympics are not the same thing. While both organizations create platforms for disabled people to compete in sports, the Special Olympics are not another name for the Paralympics. Here are some of the major differences. The Paralympics value competition in elite skill level. The Special Olympics are all about the value of sport to enable people to reach their full potential. In order to be selected for the Paralympics, you have to be selected through an international qualifier competition or other international selection procedures. While for the Special Olympics, that’s through random selection. The types of disabilities also vary. For the Paralympics, it’s physical, visual, and intellectual disabilities. And for the Special Olympics, it’s mainly intellectual disabilities.”
