It’s that time of year, the IRS has begun accepting 2021 tax returns. But if you haven’t filed yet, will your return arrive faster if you file digitally? The VERIFY team confirms this is true.

ANSWER: This is true. Our source Erin Collins is a national taxpayer advocate and independent Ombudsman within the Department of Treasury. Last summer, her office found the average paper return took about as twice as long to process compared to an electronic return.
This January, in her report to congress, Collins said the IRS was so excruciatingly slow at processing some paper returns, that in some cases, it took two weeks just to open an envelope and up to eight months for paper filers to get their refund.
