Hello dear subscribers, today we'll take you to Vasto-Chieti in the Abruzzo! Vasto has now become my second home because my future woman comes from Vasto. I myself will get to know Vasto from another side in 2024 and I'm looking forward to it. But now enough told. Vasto is a city in the Abruzzo region, Province of Chieti in Italy. It has about 40,000 inhabitants and Vasto is located on the Adriatic Sea. The patron of the city is San Michele. Vasto was probably founded by a Dalmatic trunk. In Roman times it was known as a histoneium, it lost this name in the unrest after the collapse of the Roman Empire. The city's inhabitants are referred to as Vastesi or Histoniensi.
Under Mussolini, the city changed its name in Istonio in 1938, based on the Roman origin of the city. In 1956, part of one of the oldest quarter of the historical center of Vasto was devastated by a series of landslides. About one hundred and fifty houses were destroyed, including some public and religious buildings of considerable architectural value, including the Chiesa di San Pietro!
Vastos's sights include the Cattedral di San Giuseppe and the Palazzo d’Avalos in the immediate vicinity. It is used today as an archaeological museum and for art exhibitions. The Castello Caldoresco castle complex, which was only a few hundred meters from Palazzo, was built by the military commander Caldora in the early 15th century.
Also worth seeing are the Torre di Bassano, once part of the city wall, the Faro di Punta Penna lighthouse at the harbor - with 70 meters the second highest lighthouse in Italy - and the pretty Piazza Rossetti in the city center. At the Marina di Vasto, the pier Il Pontile also enables the visitor to walk out to the sea - completely dry foot.
