(22 Aug 2016) Former President Jimmy Carter says the 2016 presidential campaign has been exciting and unprecedented, adding that the candidates in the two major parties are "quite unpopular."
The 91-year-old Carter spoke with The Associated Press on Monday on the site of a Habitat for Humanity construction project in Memphis.
Carter, considered a worldwide ambassador for the home building charity, said he does not like to advocate for particular issues because he works equally with Republicans, Democrats and people of many religious beliefs in his role with Habitat for Humanity. But he did say that "everybody knows that I'm a Democrat, and I'll be voting Democratic."
He added that "the way it's turned out, both choices in the major parties are quite unpopular, but I don't have any doubt that one of the candidates is better qualified than the other."
Former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the Democrat in the race for president, while billionaire businessman Donald Trump is the Republican candidate.
