일본 수도권 10여년만의 강진…32명 부상
Tokyo was hit with a magnitude 5-point-9 quake, injuring more than 30 people and stranding thousands of commuters.
Experts warn the Japanese capital may see more tremors of a similar intensity in the coming weeks.
Kim Cheong-ah brings the updates.
An earthquake in Japan has left at least 32 people injured,... some with serious wounds caused by falling furniture in their homes.
Local media has reported differing figures in terms of how many have been left injured, with some saying that it could be over 50.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the 5-point-9 magnitude earthquake occurred at 10:41 PM on Thursday night in northwestern Chiba Prefecture.
It had a depth of 75 kilometers... and logged a "strong five" on Japan's seismic intensity scale of seven in parts of Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture.
Fortunately, the quake did not trigger a tsunami.
The tremors disrupted public transport throughout the Tokyo metropolitan area, affecting more than 368-thousand people, with one train in Tokyo's Adachi Ward derailing.
It also burst water pipes and caused power cuts across several cities.
However, authorities say there have been no reports of major damage.
It is the strongest earthquake to hit Japan's capital area since the magnitude 9 earthquake in 2011, causing the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
With another magnitude 3-point-6 quake occurring close to the focus of Thursday's tremor at around 5 AM Friday morning, experts are concerned that there may be more.
According to the Japanese government's Earthquake Research Committee, there is a 70 percent chance of a magnitude 7 earthquake occurring within 30 years directly beneath Tokyo , which could result in a possible death toll over 23-thousand.
