During his childhood, he first went to St. Michael's Academy in Chennai for high school. He later completed his degree in Microbiology from the Hindustan College of Arts and Sciences. He then went to Scotland to pursue a master's degree. Varalakshmi Sarathkumar holds a Masters Degree in Management from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
On his return to India, he started learning acting from Anupam Kerin School of Acting, one of the best acting schools in India.
Varalakshmi's father R. Sarathkumar married Varalakshmi's mother Sayadevi in 1984. Varalakshmi was born in 1985 as the eldest child of her parents. His sister Pooja Sarathkumar was born in 1987.
