As a neuro-ophthalmologist, Ocular Myasthenia Gravis (aka OMG) is one of the most common conditions I manage.
Here’s some basic info about OMG:
1️⃣ OMG is an autoimmune neurologic condition in which antibodies are created against the neuromuscular junction
2️⃣ OMG causes weakness of the extraocular muscles, leading to double vision and/or droopy eyelids
3️⃣ Testing for OMG begins with blood work (acetylcholine receptor antibodies), though in 50% of cases, antibodies may be negative, called seronegative OMG. If labs are negative, other testing can be done.
4️⃣ OMG can progress to generalized myasthenia gravis (GMG) in which other muscle groups may become involved. Weakness of the shoulder or thigh muscles, breathing, swallowing, or voice may occur. If OMG will progresses to GMG, it usually happens within the first two years of symptoms.
5️⃣ OMG is treatable with medications such as pyridostigmjne, steroids or other immunosuppressive agents. I have also found nutritional and lifestyle approaches to be critical. This may include elimination of certain pro-inflammatory foods and stress reduction.
