Within the framework of 25 quick-fire questions, this is a celebrity interview with the late English Actor John Nettleton, where he talked candidly about his life, and career, working in film, television, and the theatre in both the UK and around the World.
John Slade Nettleton was born on the 5th of February 1929 in Sydenham, South London, UK.
John Nettleton recalls that after leaving RADA in 1951, and then aged twenty-three, went to Stratford-on-Avon and joined the Shakespeare Theatre, appearing alongside Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, and Anthony Quayle.
John Nettleton worked extensively on stage throughout his career with a string of West End roles and plays with the Old Vic, The National Theatre, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In this interview, describes the joy he felt, touring in plays, particularly with his wife, Actress Deirdre Doone, in Countries such as America, Canada, Singapore and across Europe.
John Nettleton acknowledges here that he is mainly remembered for playing the role of ‘Sir Arnold Robinson’, Cabinet Secretary, opposite Nigel Hawthorne in the British political satire sitcom, ‘Yes, Minister’ (1980-1984), and its follow-up ‘Yes, Prime Minister’ (1985-1988).
John Nettleton appeared in two different storylines of ‘The Avengers’. Firstly, as ‘Sir Andrew Ford’ in the 1967 episode, ‘The See-Through Man’, alongside Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg. And then with Patrick Macnee and Linda Thorson, one year in 1968 as ‘Palmer’ in the episode, ‘The Rotters’.
Other notable television credits: As ‘Pongo Little’ in, ‘Her Majesty's Pleasure’ (1968-1969); as ‘Booker’ in ‘The Champions: Full Circle’ (1968); as a ‘Police Sergeant’ in ‘Please Sir!’ (1969), and as ‘Arthur Bellamy’ in, ‘Upstairs, Downstairs: Your Obedient Servant’ (1972).
In 1989, John Nettleton appeared in the 26th season of ‘Doctor Who’, as ‘Reverend Ernest Matthews’ in ‘Ghost Light’, alongside the Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, and his companion, Sophie Aldred.
John Nettleton has also appeared in a number of films including: ‘The Jailer’ in a scene with Paul Scofield, Wendy Hiller, Susannah York, and Corin Redgrave in, ‘A Man for All Seasons’ (1966) - A film that won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 39th Academy Awards; ‘The Last Shot You Hear’ (1969) as ‘Det. Inspector Nash’; ‘Some Will, Some Won't’ (1970), as the Bank Manager ‘Wagstaff’, opposite Ronnie Corbett; ‘And Soon the Darkness’ (1970), as ‘Gendarme’, the violent sexual perpetrator opposite Pamela Franklin, and Michele Dotrice; ‘Black Beauty’ (1971), as ‘Sir William’ with Mark Lester; ‘American Friends’ (1991), ‘Jinnah’ (1998), as General Gracie’, opposite Christopher Lee and James Fox; Roman Polanski’s adaptation of ‘Oliver Twist’ (2005); and ‘Fishtales’ (2007) opposite Billy Zane.
