Note: There is a mistaken in the LED graphic. That is long pin (positive) that should be connected to small plate, the short pin (negative) should be connected to larger plate inside the LED. The LED graphic is reversed when we design graphic but it doesn't effect to the content of video.
In this video, I going to introduce diodes, common types of diodes, and its specification.
The diode has many types such as single diode, Zener diode, light emitter diode, or is called LED, bridge diode.
Each diode has two terminal pins that are called anode and cathode.
The cathode of the diode is signed by a stripe
In the real, to diode change state from off to conduct, the voltage in anode must greater cathode about 0.3 volts to 0.7 volts. It is dependent on semiconductor material that to create a diode.
The Zener diode is similar to the single diode in forward-bias conditions. However, the Zener diode is able to conduct in reverse-bias conditions. When the Zener diode work at reverse bias, there is a voltage drop across the Zener. This voltage is called Zener voltage. It depends on the type of Zener that you can check in the manufacture datasheet.
In the real, a Zener diode is the ability to carry a less amount of current than a diode.
It is often used Zener to design clamp voltage circuits or combine Zener with transistors to design regulator voltage circuits or another purpose. We will see them in another video.
The full name of a LED is a light-emitting diode.
When the LED forwards bias, it will emit light. However, the threshold voltage or forward bias voltage of LED is greater than the diode. It is depended on the color of the led that is shown in the manufacture datasheet. Example forward bias voltage of red led is about 1.8 volts, blue led is about 3 volts
Bridge diode is very common in full-wave rectifier circuit designs. In essence, it is composed of four diodes as follows.
About the bridge diode, I will make another video about it. That is a full-wave rectifier circuit design.
In this video, I only introduce basic things about types of diodes.
