(8 Sep 2017) US Virgin Islands' residents said on Thursday they were "fortunate" to withstand the force of Hurricane Irma, after it swept through the island.
Lashing rain and winds damaged many of the boats moored at St Thomas island.
Travis Long-James, a sailboat worker, said he had a boat moored in the harbour, which is now "nowhere to be found".
Another resident, who has lived on the archipelago for 48 years, said he had experience five hurricanes but Irma was "probably the worst that I've seen".
Despite facing a major cleanup operation on the island, both were optimistic, saying they were going to "look forward and...keep on going."
US Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp said on Thursday the archipelago was receiving badly needed federal help after Hurricane Irma significantly damaged St. Thomas and St. John with top winds of 150 miles (241 kilometres) per hour for more than four hours.
Fire and police stations collapsed and the main hospital in St. Thomas sustained heavy damage.
