The Dolomites, Italian: Dolomiti also known as the Dolomite Mountains, Dolomite Alps or Dolomitic Alps, are a mountain range in northeastern Italy. They form part of the Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east. The northern and southern borders are defined by the Puster Valley and the Sugana Valley (Italian: Valsugana). The Dolomites are in the regions of Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, covering an area shared between the provinces of Belluno, Vicenza, Verona, Trentino, South Tyrol, Udine and Pordenone. To the south is Lake Garda. Lake Garda ( Italian: Lago di Garda or Benaco ), one of the Northern Italian lakes , is the largest lake in Italy , named after the municipality of Garda on the eastern shore. Its ancient name from about 200 BC to 800 AD was Lacus Benacus . The name is said to derive from an ancient deity called Benacus . Lake Garda was formed in the last Ice Age by a branch of the Adige glacier , traces of which can still be traced, particularly in the terminal moraines around the southern shore, e.g. at Lonato del Garda , Solferino , Valeggio sul Mincio and Custoza . The first settlements on the lake shore date back to around 2000 BC.
