The Langmuir trough module by DataPhysics Instruments can be used to study monolayers of surface-active molecules in a tensiometer of the DCAT series.
With two movable barriers the available surface area of a liquid inside the trough can be changed. Thus, properties like the area per molecule or the surface pressure can be analyzed. And by oscillatory movement of the barriers, surface rheological parameters like viscoelasticity can be evaluated.
Applications include the fundamental research of surfactants and surface-active nanoparticles, the modelling of cell membranes and biomolecular interactions, as well as applied research on dispersing agents and stabilizers for food, cosmetics, petroleum, and pharmaceuticals.
The optional dip coater can be used to deposit the well-controlled monolayer onto a substrate by the Langmuir-Blodgett or Langmuir-Schaefer method.
Thus, additional applications like study of coatings based on nanoparticles, research on layer-structured elements or development of biosensors are possible.
