Features of the street
While Istiklal Street istiklal caddesi and its surroundings maintain their positive and negative features from the past, they also carry the characteristic of being the most cosmopolitan region of Turkey without exception. Istiklal Street, which is an indispensable place for foreign and domestic visitors coming to Istanbul, is always crowded at almost every hour of the day, except for hours that can be counted towards the morning. From world-famous brands to passages selling cheap clothes, the street today is like a clothing store complex in terms of shopping. Clothing, underwear, accessories, bijouterie, shoe-bag shops make up about half of the shopping areas on the street. The rest consists of banks and restaurants ranging from fast food kiosks that appeal to almost every palate and budget, to global restaurant chains, traditional flavors such as fish restaurants, pudding shops, dessert shops and pastry shops. For night outs, it has an enormous range of bars, from taverns to folk song houses, from fasil venues to rock bars, from strip clubs to gay bars. The street also hosts many cultural centers such as theatre, cinema, bookstores and art galleries.
At the same time, many people who wanted to defend their rights, raise their voices and be visible in this society for years met on this street and defended their rights. On May 15, 2011, tens of thousands of people gathered in Turkey to protest the law that will come into force on August 22, 2011.
Nostalgic Tram serving along Istiklal Street
Tram service was carried out in Istanbul from 1869 to 1966, first on horseback and then as electric. The tram was put into operation again as Nostalgic Tram between Taksim and Tünel, which was closed to motor vehicle traffic at the end of 1990. This route, which is 1.65 km long, is single track and has two wagons consisting of a matrix and a trailer. It is a touristic service rather than transportation, with an average daily passenger capacity of 2,500. The trees planted parallel to the tram tracks in the 1990s were removed in 2005.
