Rockwool Grow medium is made from molten rock spun into cotton candy-like fibers and then compressed into cubes, blocks, or slabs.
I use this because it has a tremendous capacity for absorbing nutrient solution while retaining plenty of oxygen for rapid plant growth.
These plugs can be used in other applications besides hydroponics including potted plants or garden beds.
Like all rocks, these are non-biodegradable so after use don't throw them into your compost.
Expanded Clay pebbles are a great addition and can be used to top off the Rockwool, prevent algae growth, and stabilize the plant.
Algae was a big problem when I first started so getting ahead of it is a big deal.
