~~~~~~› Description ‹~~~~~~
The goal of this course is to provide musicians of all levels with the tools and techniques to create music inspired by tunes produced on retro game systems, more specifically the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
This course will provide an in-depth look into emulating different types of instruments with the basic waveforms and filters offered by the NES hardware. We'll also look at some core concepts and techniques needed to produce authentic sounding chiptunes. By the end, the student should have the resources needed to begin writing and producing his/her own chiptunes, ready for publishing to iTunes, Spotify, Youtube, etc.
Welcome to “Make Chiptunes With Logic Pro X And The Magical 8-Bit Plug.” This course is designed to help amateur to intermediate musicians learn how to create chiptunes, or 8-bit music, using Logic Pro X and YMCK's free, Magical 8-Bit Plug.
I am your host and instructor, Jim Kulakowski. I'm a music composer and sound designer with nearly 20 years of combined writing and recording experience. I've written music and have created sound effects for short films, animations, advertisements, podcasts, and, of course, 8-bit-style video games!
I've developed this course for amateur to intermediate musicians, but even experts can get something out of this. My aim is show musicians how they can transform their musical styles into chiptune-style pieces. One great thing about chiptunes is that they allow various styles of music to sound similar due to the limited selection of voices available. So, regardless of your particular genre of music, you'll be able to take the tools I provide here and begin writing authentic sounding pieces that harness your creativity and musical flavor.
Here is a brief look at some of the topics I'll cover in this course. We'll discuss several key aspects to making your chiptunes sound like they were pulled right from a retro video game. We'll talk about the limitations of the NES hardware, the available voices, live samples, composition techniques, and much more.
Let's begin by gathering the tools we'll need for this course. I'll see you in the next video!
