Microsoft Excel Tutorial: How to move the subtotals right one column?
Welcome to the MrExcel Podcast, where we bring you the best tips and tricks for mastering Excel. In this episode, we will be discussing how to shift subtotals right one column. This is a common issue that many Excel users face, and we are here to provide a simple solution.
During a recent seminar in Springfield, Missouri, a participant named Rebecca approached me with a question. She wanted to add subtotals to her data set, but instead of having them in the same column, she wanted to shift them one column to the right. This may seem like a daunting task, but with the right steps, it can be easily achieved.
To add subtotals by account, start by selecting one cell in the account column. Then, go to the Data tab and click on the A to Z button to sort the data. Next, under the Outline group, click on the Subtotal button. In the Subtotal dialog box, select "At each change in Account" and choose the Sum function. Then, add the subtotal to the Amount column and click OK. Just like that, you will have subtotals at each change in the account number.
Now, to shift the subtotals one column to the right, we need to collapse the data to the #2 view. This can be done by clicking on the Group and Outline buttons that were added by the Subtotal command. Then, select all the visible cells by choosing one column to the left of the subtotal column and using the shortcut key Alt+;. Next, go to the Home tab and click on Insert, then select "Shift cells right" and click OK. This will move the subtotals to the desired column. Finally, go back to the #3 view and you will see the totals in the new column.
In this episode, we have covered a simple yet effective solution for shifting subtotals right one column.
