In April of 2023, police in New London, Connecticut found high school student D’Nazia Uzzle unresponsive inside the home of her boyfriend, 19-year-old N’Shon Cherry, and his mother, 41-year-old Erica Cherry. The young woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead from blunt force injuries. According to court documents, Erica told investigators that she overheard her son and Uzzle arguing upstairs and went to see what was going on. She said she saw Uzzle hit N’Shon before going to the kitchen and retrieving a knife. Erica claimed that the teen stabbed her son in the shoulder, prompting her to intervene. She tried to disarm Uzzle and was stabbed in the thigh. N’Shon told police that he and Uzzle had gotten into an argument while partying after Uzzle went through his phone and discovered that he was talking to another woman. He claimed that when his mother got involved, he put Uzzle on the couch, where she appeared to fall asleep. The young man went on to explain that he believed Uzzle was just “very drunk,” but that he eventually noticed that she wasn’t breathing. She had fallen into cardiac arrest, and her head, neck and body were covered in bruises when she arrived at the emergency room. Erica provided seemingly conflicting details about what had happened, stating that Uzzle had fallen down the stairs but later admitting that she “may have” pushed the teen. Five months after the tragic incident, she and N’Shon were charged with first-degree manslaughter, accessory to first-degree strangulation, first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, and cruelty to persons. N’Shon and Erica are both currently free on $250,000 bail amid the ongoing case. According to the most recent available updates, a plea bargain has been offered to the defendants, but it’s unclear whether they plan to accept the deal.
