David ben David was born in Czechoslovakia and in 1940 he emigrated to Eretz Israel on the "Patria." Five days before the ship exploded, Ben David and a friend jumped overboard and swam to Haifa port. He immediately attempted to join the British army, joined the engineering corps, and in 1944 joined the Jewish Brigade. On the day of liberation, he was with his unit on the banks of the Po River in Northern Italy.
ben-David deserted from the army, was taken captive by the Soviets, was later released, and arrived in Bratislava, where he was informed that his parents had perished. He was handed over to the British as a deserter and was imprisoned. In September of 1945, he returned to his unit in the Brigade, which was now located in Belgium. When the British decided to dismantle the Brigade, an underground movement was formed, known as Hamercaz
Lago1a (the center for the Diaspora), whose goa1 was to ensure that the refugees in the Diaspora were not abandoned.
120 members of this movement exchanged identities with refugees who were sent to Palestine in their stead. These members remained in Europe and continued to assist the She'erit Hapleita and to encourage their Aliyah to Eretz Israel, with the help of seminars, Hebrew songs and the teaching of Judaism.
In 1947 David ben David returned to Palestine with false papers and went to Kfar Etzion. where he fought in the War of Independence and was taken captive by the Jordanians.
He has been a member of Kibbutz Nir Etzion since 1950. This kibbutz was set up after Kfar Etzion fell into the hands of the Jordanians.
