Federal ministers and First Nations leaders announced a $40-billion agreement in principle to compensate First Nations children and their families broken up by a discriminatory child welfare system. About half the settlement is to go to compensation and the rest to begin reforming the child welfare system to end decades of policies that destroyed rather than helped families in crisis.
