More rockets hit Kilis from Syria
Rockets fired from Syria have landed in the Turkish city of Kilis for the third day running. Daesh terrorists control the area just across the border. Turkey has been hitting Daesh positions in retaliation. No casualties have been reported from Wednesday’s shelling, but two people died and at least 18 people were injured earlier in the week.
Peace talks to resume amid elections
Peace talks to try to end the war in Syria are set to resume in Geneva on Wednesday. But the Syrian regime’s insistence on holding parliamentary elections, and recent fighting in Aleppo could threaten any deal. The UN, the High Negotiations Committee and other opponents of Bashar al Assad say it’s not an option for him to remain in power. Syria has now been at war for five years - at least 250 thousand people have been killed and 11 million others displaced.
Rebels return to Juba
A deputy rebel leader has arrived in Juba as part of a peace deal reached in August. It comes less than a week before opposition leader Riek Machar is set to return to the capital. President Salva Kiirr eappointed his rival as vice president in February. Machar had held the post until he was fired in 2013 and accused of attempting a coup. Fighting between Kiir’s and Machar’s supporters broke out along ethnic lines soon after. It dragged South Sudan into a war that killed thousands of people and displaced more than two million.
Ryan ‘won’t be GOP nominee’
The speaker of the house, Paul Ryan, says he won’t run for president in this year’s elections. It appears unlikely that frontrunner Donald Trump will win enough delegates to secure the Republican nomination before the National Convention in July. There’s been speculation the party would choose Ryan if it was unable to choose a nominee in the first round of voting. But he’s said the Republican nomination should go to someone who campaigned for it.
