“Designing biomaterials for therapeutic goals: from radiotherapy dosimeters to tissue engineering and to bio-adhesives”
Dr. Kibret Mequanint is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering & the School of Biomedical Engineering at Western University in London Ontario, Canada. He joined Western in 2003 after completing his Ph.D. from the University of Stellenbosch (Cape Town, South Africa) and two successful postdoctoral fellowships from Darmstadt Technical University (Germany) and McMaster University (Canada). His research interest is in the areas of biomaterials, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, bio-adhesives, and non-diffusing radiotherapy gel dosimeters. He has authored and co-authored more than 130 peer-reviewed Journal publications, over 70 Conference proceedings, and several patents that have been licensed. His contributions to biomaterials and regenerative medicine research have been recognized by a number of prestigious awards such as the Early Researcher Award (Government of Ontario), Engineering Excellence in Research Award (Western), Faculty Scholar Award (Western), and Bikila Research Excellence Award (2014). In addition to research, Dr. Mequanint is a dedicated teacher/mentor receiving both Western’s Faculty of Engineering's highest teaching award (2011) and Western’s Edward Pleva Teaching Award (2015) - the highest teaching award the University bestows on its faculty.
In terms of academy memberships, in 2018, Dr. Mequanint was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) as one of the top 2% of Medical and Biological Engineers. In 2021, he was elected to the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, and, in 2022, he was elected to the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Mequanint is active in the Canadian Biomaterials community and served as the president of CBS. He is an Associate Editor of Frontiers Vascular Physiology (IF 4.6) and an editorial board member of several biomaterials-related Journals.
