In this #Shorts video we'll learn how to check whether the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) non-return bypass, or check, valve is still present in the intake manifold of all GM Ecotec 1.4L turbo engines. These engines are found in the Chevy Cruze, Chevy Sonic, Chevy Trax, and Buick Encore. This DIY visual check is specific for the GM Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine only.
It is a common problem for the small orange silicone non-return flapper valve embedded inside the intake manifold of this particular engine to become dislodged from the intake manifold and be "eaten" by the engine (Yikes!). Losing this PCV non-return valve will then result in problems down the way ultimately causing a check engine light (e.g. DTC P0299), as well as damaging related seals due to the elevated crankcase pressures that result. It's a good practice to check that the non-return valve is present annually or so, such as whenever you do an oil change life reset, so you can get ahead of the problems that result from this weak design point.
The vehicle illustrated is a 2015 Chevy Sonic LT. But this visual check is applicable to the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Trax, and Buick Encore models with the GM Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine from model years 2011 thru 2020.
*Note:*
_To reinstall the ventilation hose we removed after inspection of the bypass valve, make sure the rubber o-ring is inserted first (if it came out of the elbow), then the hard plastic washer (if it came out of the elbow). Then push the metal retaining clip back onto the elbow all the way to the fully locked position (there's a half way point but you need to go past this so it's completely pushed on as it was before being removed). Position the hose back in the loop retainer I showed unlocking first in the video, and push the hose elbow down gently, but firmly, until the hose elbow metal clip will re-snap back into place on the intake manifold fitting/nipple. The manifold fitting is tapered, and will expand the metal clip as it slides down then snap into a groove on it. Once that's back in place, press and lock the loop retainer to hold the hose in securely. Be firm, but gentle, if your vehicle is older as this is a brittle type of plastic and the hose can easily break._

If your non-return valve is missing, it's time to either replace the intake manifold assembly, or investigate an aftermarket replacement for the non-return valve problem such as a Cruzekit.
