The Pick Axe Loop is a motorcycle trail especially designed for larger ADV bikes. It's 370 kilometres of gravel back roads, tracks, trails and some paved sections through the Madawaska Highlands country southeast of Algonquin Park in eastern Ontario. ADV bike? Well, I don't have one of those, but I do have a 1960 Panther - a bike that was designed when all bikes were expected to do whatever their owners wanted, whether it was lugging a sidecar full of kids, or taking to a muddy trail. Spring may not be the best time to ride the Pick Axe Trail no matter what you're riding. As I quickly discovered, many of the minor roads are blocked with snow and ice, passable only by snowmachine and four-wheeler. Oh well, perhaps I'll have another bash once the snow has gone. June should be good - but by then the blackflies and mosquitos will be hungry.....
