The list of games that failed to live up to their hype is a very long one these days. As the amount of games that get developed and released grows each year, so does the amount of games that fail to accomplish what they promised.
Despite what the internet might tell you, there is actually a wide variety of reasons that games end up falling behind their own intentions. Sometimes marketing is misapplied by the publisher to a niche game and it ends up being advertised as something other than that, while sometimes, yes, it’s just a bad game that gets marketed as a good one, but many times a game can be okay or even good and advertised appropriately, but it’s intended audience gets overly excited and ends up inadvertently expecting much more from it than they should have due to other circumstances outside of the developer’s control. In the case of The Order 1886, I would contend it’s at least partly the latter.
But there is no denying that the game had its fair share of issues that also helped lead it to the retirement home way before it was intended to go there.
