Hey, I'm Mo Saleem, and today, I'm gonna share with you the evidence-based truth about tribulus and testosterone.
0:15 What is tribulus terrestris?:
Tribulus is an annual herb that's native to the warm and tropical climates of South Asia, Southern Africa, Southern Australia, and parts of Southern Europe as well.
It has been used in Chinese herbal medicine to treat cardiovascular disease and in Ayurvedic medicine to enhance aspects of male health. Today, it is the most popular testosterone booster ingredient on the market. One search on Amazon for testosterone boosters will reveal a bunch of supplements that all have tribulus as a primary ingredient.
1:17 The research on tribulus and testosterone:
Elite rugby players given 450mg of tribulus for 5-weeks experienced no change in their testosterone levels. Healthy men given either 20mg/kg or 10mg/kg of tribulus had the same testosterone levels as placebo after 4-weeks of supplementation.
In infertile men, however, tribulus supplementation was able to improve sperm concentration and testosterone levels by 17%. So according to the research, tribulus fails to have an influence on the testosterone levels of otherwise healthy men. Even in infertile men the effect is negligible.
2:52 Why is tribulus so popular if it doesn't work?
Three reasons. The first is that it boosts libido. And what a lot of men don't understand is that although higher testosterone can lead to an increased sex drive, a higher sex drive doesn't translate to higher testosterone. So a lot of men think that tribulus is boosting their testosterone where, in reality, it is only boosting their libido.
The second reason is because tribulus was brought into the spotlight via a study performed on rats, rabbits, and monkeys. In that study, the animals were injected with tribulus and they experienced an increase in testosterone. But as we saw with the research, this effect doesn't carry over in humans.
And the third reason is because tribulus contains a compound called steroid saponins. In theory, this compound should boost testosterone. But it seems like the human body digests the active ingredients in this compound leaving it unable to exert an influence.
4:47 Does tribulus actually have any benefits?
Supplementing with tribulus can improve markers of cardiovascular disease, ease your liver and kidney's of oxidative stress, and reduce the effects of cortisol on the body.
5:23 In conclusion:
The main takeaway is that you should always do your research before trying out any supplements. Just because a supplement is popular doesn't mean it actually works. And this is exactly the case with tribulus terrestris.
