Prof Philip Poortmans speaks to ecancer in an online interview for the virtual BGICC 2021 meeting about postmastectomy radiation therapy in patients who had immediate breast reconstruction.
He starts by stating that, where possible, breast-conserving therapy is preferable over a mastectomy. However, he explains that patients who require a mastectomy are increasingly offered immediate breast reconstruction. Some of these patients will require post-mastectomy radiation, which poses some challenges to the oncologists now working. with reconstructed breasts.
Prof Poortmans elaborates on some of these complications and talks about the work being done to review outcomes and adapt post-mastectomy treatment to these new circumstances. He outlines their findings so far and the next steps in their research, mentioning their upcoming Recon trial.
