Donald Tusk, President of the European Council of the European Union, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 25 September - 01 October 2018).
Addressing the General Assembly, the President of the European Union (EU) Donald Tusk today (27 Sep) said, “only collective responsibility can offer effective solutions to global phenomenon such as migration and forced displacement.”
Further on this global refugee crisis, Tusk said he “truly hope that the recent UN debate on the future governance of migration and refugee protection represent a step towards to the right direction.”
The President of the European Union also said that the United Nations is the best tool available to address today’s conflicts, famine, forced displacement, terrorism and the return of nuclear tensions.
He also reaffirmed EU's commitment to the Paris Agreement. Tusk also took the occasion to “appeal to all the leaders to undertake action to protect the waters around the Arctic, there is still time to save the natural habitat of many endangered species by establishing maritime sanctuaries in the Southern Ocean.”
The President of the European Union also called for peaceful denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, encouraging all concerned to uphold the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran as a multilateral deal that delivered more security for all.
He said “the agreement is good for European, regional and global security. That is why the European Union is committed to maintaining the agreement as long as Iran remains fully committed to it.”
Emphasizing that the European Union wanted to work in partnership with African countries on challenges ranging from security and counter-terrorism, to economic growth and job creation, he said his Organization was already cooperating with United Nations (UN) missions on peacekeeping and conflict prevention in Mali, the Central African Republic (CAR) and other conflict zones, while doing its best to alleviate the humanitarian crisis affecting more than 20 million people in the Lake Chad Basin, South Sudan and Somalia.
