Although AI systems are solving problems that were recently thought unsolvable, they face the very real threat of breaking down when they encounter the unknown. Even more troubling is that they have no mechanisms for recognizing when they are operating in an environment far away from their training data. What are the limits of AI? In his talk, Dr. John Liechty argues Artificial Intelligence would be better named, Augmented Intelligence, emphasizing that these systems are ultimately tools.
