The implementation of ecological restoration projects for watercourses meets a certain number of resistance at the local level as well as at the national level where a controversy exists. From the example of the dismantling of structures across small and dimension, it is a question of questioning these difficulties and outline operational avenues to better support this public action. These will be based on the means to promote the necessary articulation between an ecological project and a territorial project. The geographical approach, in particular the notion of hydrosocial territory, and the analysis of the governance processes at work in the production of ecological restoration projects are mobilized. In particular, this involves discussing the place of inhabitants and users in these projects, and seeing how to take into account communities as a whole, by developing attention to both humans and non-humans in a relational approach.

Marie-Anne Germaine is a lecturer in geography at the University of Paris Nanterre. She carries out her work within the UMR LAVUE. Her research focuses on the articulation between environmental issues, landscaping and local development of territories in spaces qualified as ordinary. She participates in several research programs on the ecological restoration of watercourses in which she focuses on the role of ecological concerns in the construction of landscape representations and in the confrontation of the different models of representation of the river (governance, conflict, etc.).
As part of the "Ecological restoration and management issues" Marie-Anne Germaine presents the conflicts and controversies of river restoration projects.

This international conference is dedicated to research and practices on natural and human-impacted large rivers, in particular how they work, changes and processes, interface and interactions, management policies, engineering. The I.S.Rivers conference concentrates on state of the art management strategies and lessons learned from individual case studies. Particular consideration is given to the integration of the physical, ecological and social perspectives of the different stakeholders involved in river management (governance, economy, culture), which is reflected in the title of the conference (“Integrative Sciences for rivers”).
