*– GAME OVERVIEW –*
_Akalabeth: World of Doom_ for the Apple II is a computer role-playing game (CRPG). It was developed by Richard Garriott and published by California Pacific. The game was released in 1980.
• Richard Garriott (aka "Lord British") created _Akalabeth: World of Doom_ as a teenage hobby project while still in high school, using Applesoft BASIC.
◦ Garriott is the sole author of the game, with the exception of the title artwork by neighborhood friend Keith Zabalaoui. Other friends – and regular Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) partners – provided playtesting.
• In _Akalabeth: World of Doom,_ the player receives quests from Lord British to kill a variety of increasingly difficult monsters.
◦ The final task is to kill a Balrog – the demonic monster from J. R. R. Tolkien's _The Lord of the Rings._
• _Akalabeth: World of Doom_ is considered to be the first published role-playing game.
◦ It serves as a precursor to _Ultima_ (1981) – which launched the illustrious career of Richard Garriott – and was officially renamed _Ultima 0: Akalabeth_ in Origin's 1997 _Ultima Collection_ compilation for Microsoft DOS (MS-DOS).
• The port of _Akalabeth: World of Doom_ from the _Ultima Collection_ was programmed by Ultima fan Corey Roth.
◦ This version adds color graphics, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) music and the ability to save the game in progress.
