"He could be the kindest person you've ever seen. He'd do anything for you if he liked you. He was a hell of a lot of fun to be around, too. Everything was just one big joke to him. But he had this other side. He could be mean as hell, cruel."
This was how Bob von Busch described his high school friend, Charles Raymond "Charlie" Starkweather. Starkweather's other side was unleashed upon the world when, over the course of little more than a week in January 1958, he went on a killing spree that claimed 10 lives, accompanied by his girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate.
Please note that this program was made in 1993. Caril Ann Fugate married Frederick Clair in 2007. He died in a car accident in 2015 which also seriously injured Fugate. Fugate was denied a pardon to "alleviate the burden" of being known as a convicted killer by the Nebraska Parole Board in 2020. She still maintains her innocence.
This is a TV recording, and thus has about 3 minutes cut for ads.
