STORYLINE:
Flames engulfed the main market district in the Honduras capital Tegucigalpa on Saturday, less than a week after one of the worst prison fires on record killed 358 people only 55 miles (90 kilometres) away.
Arguments were still going on outside Comayagua prison as relatives sought news of loved ones, not knowing if they had died or survived four days after the blaze, as suffocating smoke drifted across the capital.
The fire, thought to have started in the Colon market area, also affected the nearby Alvarez and San Isidro markets.
One theory is that it began in a restaurant kitchen.
Some 500 stalls were damaged or destroyed and 11 people were injured.
Onlookers said much of the market area was outdoors, reducing the possibility of people trapped in blazing buildings.
But, according to some stall holders, fire crews did not react fast enough.
"We were waiting for the firefighters and it took them a while," said one man.
"There were many stalls that could have been saved and they did not make it on time."
Mayor Ricardo Alvarez said two women were rescued, one with a head injury and another with symptoms of asphyxiation.
He promised low interest loans to help all those who lost businesses.
Flames three metres (ten feet) high left a large cloud of smoke that could be seen from outside the capital.
Neighbours whose houses were not affected by the flames were moved out because of respiratory problems caused by the thick smoke.
