In our latest interview, Pastor Matthew Spencer of Christ Church International sits down with Pastor Nick Cady of White Fields Community Church to discuss the value and priority that prayer has in our city. We know you will enjoy this interview as Pastor Cady speaks about the intimacy that we are invited to have with God through prayer.
Interview Highlights
Pastor Cady explained that Jesus showed us how to pray and that we pray to God as Father.
He also explained that Jesus invites us into this relationship that He, Himself, has with the Father through prayer, which is characterized in three specific ways:
Shared Experience
Intimacy and,
Communication
Pastor Nick explained that, “Prayer is an invitation into intimacy with God.”
Intimacy can be defined as, “shared experience.” And that by praying, we “…enter into shared experience with God.
He said, “What we have with prayer is this that we enter into this shared experience with God where we’re communicating with Him, where hopefully listening, and hoping to hear from Him. And we see that with Jesus…. Jesus inviting us into the kind of relationship with the Father that He had. And that relationship was characterized by shared experience, intimacy, and communication, so being communing with God.”
Pastor Nick shared a phrase by Jonathan Edwards:
“God is most glorified in our dependence on Him.”
In following this thought Pastor Nick said that God is most glorified when we live lives dependent on Him.
“…when we are dependent on Him, that is when He is most glorified in us. We see that lived out in the life of Jesus. And I just think that it is amazing that we get to be invited into that relationship with the Father that Jesus had.”
Then quoting John 17:3, he explained that eternal life begins by knowing the Father and believing in the Son, Jesus Christ.
“The idea there is that eternal life isn’t just something that we’re going to get…when we get to heaven. It is something that begins here and now. And we get to experience it [eternal life] and live it out in dependence on the Father which is practiced, in part, in prayer.”
Pastor Matthew continued the discussion by adding that, “We need to be reliant and dependent on God”, and “…cursed is the man who trusts in his own flesh…(Jeremiah 17:5)”. He continued by saying, “It’s very easy for us…as Americans to trust in our own flesh. And God never wants us to be independent of Him. We need to be dependent on the Father.”
They concluded the discussion by praying over the people of the city, that the people of Longmont would experience this dependency and relationship with God.
