Freshco is a Kenyan company that sells high-yield hybrid seeds, especially maize seed, to small-scale farmers. Maize seed that is optimized for the climates of Kenya's various regions can produce up to six tons of grain per hectare, compared to only one ton with ordinary seed. In this video, you will visit farmers in the field and learn how improved seed is helping promote food security in Kenya.
Freshco doubled its production of maize seed last year -- an increase enabled by Root Capital financing. As with most agricultural businesses, Freshco's finances are tied to the harvest cycle; expenses are highest early in the season, when revenues are at their lowest. Root Capital lending is structured around the irregular cash flows of the rural economy. "The Root Capital loan touches all the farmers that we deal with," says Freshco's James G. Karanja.
