The 2025 Volkswagen Golf R is set to continue its tradition as the high-performance version of the popular Golf series.
As the flagship model of the Golf lineup, the Golf R takes the already impressive performance of the VW Golf GTI to the next level, thanks to its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, torque-vectoring rear differential, adaptive suspension, and optional drift mode. These features combine to deliver driving excitement far beyond the capabilities of a typical hatchback.
Stylistically, the Golf R will feature updated headlights and taillights similar to those on the 2025 GTI, but will retain distinct elements such as its front bumper, lower grille, and front air intakes.
In the U.S., the Golf R is typically sold as a fully equipped model, with the main choice for buyers being between a manual or automatic transmission.
Performance upgrades include adaptive dampers, a sport-tuned suspension, and various driving modes designed to enhance both on-road and track experiences.
Inside, the Golf R will likely offer a 10-inch display for both the infotainment and driver information systems, along with advanced features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a premium sound system, and voice-activated controls.
Despite its focus on performance, the Golf R is expected to retain practicality with a spacious interior, comfortable ride, and modern connectivity features.
On the safety front, it will likely carry or improve upon advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking.
For 2025, the Golf R's power increases to 328 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, marking a gain of 13 horsepower and 15 lb-ft. Its range of driving modes (Comfort, Sport, Race, Special, Drift, and Individual) is expanded with a new Eco mode.
In a 0-to-150-to-0 speed test, the 2023 Golf R demonstrated impressive performance, accelerating to 150 mph and coming to a stop in just 40.2 seconds, outperforming competitors like the Honda Civic Type R and Hyundai Elantra N.
The 2025 Volkswagen Golf R is expected to start at around $48,000, with prices reaching up to $49,000 depending on the selected options and trim levels.
