In this second part of newborn infections, we discuss congenital, intrauterine or trans-placentally acquired newborn infections, including the so-called “ToRCHeS” infections: congenital rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV), syphilis, plus neonatal tetanus, congenital malaria, parvovirus and others. Although diagnostic tests are often not available to confirm diagnoses and the clinical features of many types overlap, it is important to understand the clinical phenotypes, the newborns who are most at risk, the effect of maternal immunity, and the treatments that are available.
