Rebels opposed to President Bashar al-Assad roamed the streets of Syrian city of Aleppo on Friday night, saying they have liberated it from al-Assad's hold.
"By God's will and the efforts of the fighters, Aleppo is now under full control," said Mohammed Izzo, an opposition fighter from Aleppo who left in 2016. He added, "I am the son of Aleppo. I returned to my city and my land and my home by the will of God and we will not give up a single inch of the lands of Syria."
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Hamidi, research fellow and co-founder of the Syrian Studies Center at the University of St Andrews in Scotland said rebel Islamist groups "backed by Turkey" have been "surprised by how fast" they have taken parts of Aleppo.
Opposition fighters, led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, carried out a surprise sweep through government-held towns this week and reached Aleppo nearly a decade after having been forced out by Assad and his allies.
