It's hard to overstate the power and reach of multinational corporation Google.
Alphabet - Google's parent company - generates more revenue than some of the world's nations - around $US140 billion last financial year.
It's the world's most widely used search engine and has huge influence via its Gmail and Chrome services.
Google is also suspected of keeping more data on citizens than many governments, and while Facebook has faced the most heat to date, growing numbers of politicians, including the US president, are questioning whether Google's activities deserve closer scrutiny.
