Hi everyone, welcome to my channel where I talk about soap operas, actors, and everything related to British TV. Today, I have some sad news to share with you. Steve Halliwell, one of the most beloved and longest-serving actors on the popular soap opera Emmerdale, has passed away at the age of 77. Steve Halliwell played the role of Zak Dingle, the patriarch of the Dingle family, for 29 years, from 1994 until his death in 2023. He was known for his humorous and heartfelt portrayal of the character, and his chemistry and friendship with his co-stars. He also appeared in other TV shows, such as Cracker, G.B.H., and Coronation Street. In this video, I want to pay tribute to Steve Halliwell and his legacy, and share with you some of his achievements, highlights, and memories.
Steve Halliwell was born on March 21, 1946, in Bury, Lancashire, England. He had a brother, Clive, who was two years older. He worked as an apprentice engineer and in cotton and paper mills before pursuing a career in acting. He attended the Mountview Theatre School, and he was a founding member of the Interchange Theatre in Bury. He also spoke openly about his experiences with depression and alcoholism, and how he overcame them.
Steve Halliwell made his TV debut in 1977, in a show called Here I Stand. He then appeared in several TV shows in the 1980s and 1990s, such as Threads, Crown Court, Heartbeat, and Coronation Street. He also released a country rock single with his Emmerdale co-stars Billy Hartman and Alun Lewis, called "Hillbilly Rock Hillbilly Roll", in 1996.
Steve Halliwell joined the cast of Emmerdale in 1994, as Zak Dingle, the head of the Dingle clan, a family of misfits and troublemakers. He quickly became a fan favorite, and he was involved in many memorable and dramatic storylines, such as his feud with the Tate family, his marriage and divorce with Lisa Clegg, his affair and reconciliation with Joanie Wright, his battle with cancer, and his support for his son Cain Dingle. He also provided comic relief and emotional depth to the show, and he was praised for his acting skills and charisma.
Steve Halliwell had a close bond with his Emmerdale co-stars, especially Lisa Riley, who played his daughter Mandy Dingle, and Jane Cox, who played his wife Lisa Dingle. He also mentored and befriended many young actors who joined the show, such as Danny Miller, who played his grandson Aaron Dingle, and Lucy Pargeter, who played his daughter-in-law Chas Dingle. He was respected and admired by his colleagues and the producers, and he was described as a "legend" and a "gentleman" by them.
Steve Halliwell took a short break from Emmerdale in 2003, for personal reasons, and another break in 2018, for health reasons, after having a heart surgery and a pacemaker fitted. He returned to the show in 2019, and he continued to play Zak Dingle until his death in 2023. He died peacefully on December 15, 2023, surrounded by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Lynda, his three children, Paul, Michelle, and Evan, and his seven grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his fans and his family, and by the Emmerdale community. He leaves behind a rich and impressive legacy, and a lasting impact on the British TV and culture.
I want to end this video with one of my favorite quotes by Steve Halliwell, which I think sums up his spirit and his message. He said: "Life is too short to be negative. You have to take the good with the bad, smile when you're sad, love what you got and always remember what you had."¹
